I don't know how a Week 1 rematch of last year's Superb Owl game couldn't be the SEWIFFL Game of the Week. The fantasy gods are real and they are smiling upon this league at the moment. I didn't do any additional randomizing of the 2023 schedule. I love this matchup...for now. Cooper Kupp, who plays for the Los Angeles Rams, spent time in Minnesota, 1926 miles away for those of you playing along at home, to "better understand his hamstring issue"...yikes.
Players to watch: D'Andre Swift(Jeff), its an open secret that Philly has no loyalties to any RB, will Swift be able to start changing that mindset? Anthony Richardson(Zach) I'm sky high on Richardson...although I'm not sure I'm sky high on him just this early. I'm very curious to see if he hits the ground running in his first game.
We're going to have a very good idea about how this fantasy matchup is going to go by about 10pm central Thursday night. Ryan has a superstack of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce that I think might be a cheat code. Sidenote: The Kelce brothers podcast creates some great clips. When his brain isn't scrambled Tua Tagovailoa is a really solid QB, and all signs point to his brain being in tact currently, so Jim should have a solid base to try to pull an upset.
Players to Watch: Najee Harris(Jim) I think Najee is getting WAY too much. He's been a really, really solid RB and should see the field open up with Kenny Pickett getting more comfortable in the NFL. James Conner(Ryan) Let's be honest...the Cardinals are tanking for Caleb Williams and that will benefit Conner. Lots and lots of work coming his way.
At face value George is a sizable underdog, but at this point I think that's part of the play for the Powderhoundmals. George went young in the draft so a breaking in period wouldn't be unexpected. Zach has a lot of firepower, but it includes a couple of starting RBs in Pollard and Mattison who were primarily backups prior to this year. It will be interesting to see how they take on the starting duties.
Players to Watch: Tony Pollard(Andy), yes he started last year, but the pressure wasn't on and it doesn't get much higher pressure than the NFC East on SNF. I am pumped for Cowboys and the 'Manders. JK Dobbins(George) When he's been healthy he's been pretty darn good...but HE'S NEVER HEALTHY! Like literally never healthy. He's played 23 games since being drafted in 2020. I hope this is the year he can stay on the field and show what he's really capable of.
This is a fantastic matchup. Currently a razer close projection and team makeups that are strikingly similar. Really good mobile QBs with a workhorse RB, a young RB and a LOT of talent at WR and TE. I'm very curious to see just how bad the Arizona defense is this season. Budda Baker can't play all 11 positions which means players like Jahan Dotson are going to rack up yards.
Players to Watch: Darren Waller(Sam) is there a TE with more hype than Darren Waller this year? Besides the big 2, Kelce and Mark Andrews, Waller seems to be the next sexy pick with a new home in the Big Apple. Amon-Ra St. Brown(Randy) the Lions have hit an absolute home run on St.Brown in the 4th round of the 2021 draft. I think he's got the weight of the world on his shoulders right now, but even more pressure from himself.
Chris immediately runs into the oldest fantasy football problem: "My starting QB is playing my NFL team." Last year week 1 was a rainy mess. As a bad weather game superfan I'm bummed every week can't be like that. As a fantasy owner I'm sure Chris is excited things look good. Ben has a trio of WRs, Diggs, Hill and Aiyuk, that could very well be a force all year long.
Players to Watch: Kyle Pitts(Chris) who is the real Kyle Pitts? The 1000 yard rookie? Or the injured, 3rd rate TE from 2022? Week 1 will be key for Pitts. Geno Smith(Ben) Geno got a sizable deal...well..for a journyman QB that had a career year at 31. Geno has 75 million reasons to make last year his base level year and if he does that he'll make a lot of fantasy owners happy.
Last but not least. The newly branded JJ & JJ Partners in Yards(LIKE A LAWFIRM...GET IT GUYS?!?!) has at least one fan in the league. An unnamed SEWIFFL Manager was overheard saying "I'm obsessed with your team." I continue to be a big fan of James Cook at Buffalo. I've, along with some others, have sold myself that he's going to really break out this season.Â
Players to Watch: Garrett Wilson(Dan), how much does Aaron Rodgers trust Garrett Wilson? We, as Packer fans, have seen Rodgers play favorites against his young teammates in the past..will that trend continue? Joe Burrow(Bill) Joey cool is a bit banged up and that has Bengal fans and fantasy players alike worried. He's currently "Day to day" but if he ends up being limited or missing time there's going to be altered projections all across the Bengals roster.
