We made it through a rather eventful week 1! We can start with possibly the biggest injury news of the season. As of 10am the New York Jets confirmed that Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon 4 snaps into Sunday Night Football. An absolutely devastating blow to the Jets Super Bowl chances this year. On a fan level I'm bummed for Rodgers. I was excited to watch the Jets season unfold and I really think the change of scenery was doing wonders for 12 8. Moms in the greater New York area are pumped that Zach Wilson is back at the helm, but Jets fans aren't.
On to SEWIFFL business. I'm still not certain how I'm going to do these, we're just going to freestyle them for now. Starting with our Week 1 Bonus: Ben had an absolutely huge week scoring 162.08 points and taking home the first bonus of the year.
Speaking of Ben, obviously he took home a win being the highest scoring team of the week by besting Chris 162.08-111.34. Ben was bolstered by a ridiculous Tyreek Hill performance. Hill caught 11 balls for 215 yards and 2 TDs including this huge 3rd down gain late in the fourth. CMC did everything he could to keep Chris in the game, but ultimately fell short despite a fantastic 65 yard touchdown run. Chris did salvage a 1-1 record by beating the league median. Ben moves to 2-0.
Andy is another 2-0 starter taking a hard fought victory over George. Andy got a SEWIFFL record setting 40 points from the Cowboys defense. They were a force against the Giants. Special Teams TDs are always huge. Â George had a solid lineup with only a couple hiccups. Drake London disappointed fantasy managers everywhere with his goose egg on just 1 target. The Jags stack paid off big for the Powderhoundmals. Despite dropping to 1-1, there's a lot of positives in George's lineup after week 1.
Ryan took a disappointed Jim behind the fantasy woodshed, and it wasn't that kind of fantasy. Jim has been very open about his disappointment in his team, but a bright spot was Tua Tagovailoa who had a career day, 28/45 for 466 and 3 TDs(apologies for the reddit link, the video wouldn't link directly.) Ryan, I'm sure, got an extra boost of glee watching Aaron Jones shred the Bears, including this gorgeous throwback screen pass for 51 yards. The big concern, obviously, is long term injury for Jones' hamstring. Ryan goes to 2-0, while Jim starts off at 0-2.
Yours truly also had a enjoyable week. I'll be the first to admit I caught Bill on a bad week. Joe Burrow played like a 7th round pick, not the highest paid player in NFL history and that set the pace for Bart Was The Best for the week. DK Metcalf sent Derion Kendrick to Narnia with his TD route. On the winning side, Garrett Wilson put in a contender for catch of the year to tie the game up late in the fourth quarter. Bill's tough week drops him to 0-2, while Dan goes to 2-0. Lots of season left to go!
Sam clawed his way to 1-1 with his 93.3-84.76 victory over Randy. Randy starts out 0-2. Sam got a big 1st game from Bijan Robinson, who refused to be denied his first NFL TD. I'm genuinely concerned Bijan is going to score about 4 times against Green Bay next week. Amon-Ra St. Brown had people scratching their heads as to how the heck he fell to the fourth round in the draft. The 1st TD of the NFL season wasn't enough to keep Randy in the win column this week.
Our Game of the Week didn't quite live up to the hype, through no fault of the Team Owners. Zach moved to 1-1 with a 91.02-70.74 victory over Jeff. Anthony Richardson led the way with 20.92 points and an excellent spike on his first career TD. Jake Elliott was the only real performer for Jeff, so we're going to have to highlight lowlight Josh Allen who was somehow the 3rd best QB on Monday Night Football, despite Aaron Rodgers leg exploding within 5 minutes of the game starting. Jeff starts the season 0-2.
Remember, the game against the median is an experiment this year. The idea behind it is balancing out some of the randomness that comes with matchup-based fantasy sports. If we decide we're not fans after the year it can be done away with any never spoken of again.
Also, remember this year we're doing FAAB for waivers. Its a blind bid system and your budget is all you get for the season. So if you decide to go bid $98 on Gus Edwards you'll get him, but you're also going to be handcuffed for waivers the rest of the year. If you google "FAAB Week 1" you'll see plenty of "experts" talking free agents and what percentage of your FAAB budget they think you should spend. Please let me know if you have questions about Matchup against the Median and/or FAAB.
Bonus for Week 2: The Narrowest margin of victory takes home $5 USD this week.
